Before you place a wager, you should know your options. Here's an overview of most types of wagers.

The beginner might concentrate on win, place and show wagering and two-horse combination wagers, like quinella or exacta. Simply try to determine which horse is the most likely winner.

What are all these numbers?
The odds in a race reflect how much a horse is favored to win, and how much the horse will pay on the winning wager. But unlike casino games, where the odds are set by the house, horseracing is pari-mutuel. The phrase means "wagering among ourselves," so when you place a wager in racing, you affect the odds. The more money bet on a horse, the lower that horse's odds become.
The odds represent the public's perception, as measured by the amount they wager, on the likelihood of any horses chances in a race. The more money wagered on a horse reduces the odds and thus the payout price. The 'favorite' is the horse with the most money bet on it. There are multiple wagering opportunities; win, place, show, exacta, etc., but the 'WIN' odds are those most commonly displayed. The 'WIN' odds translate into approximately how much a $2 wager will pay off if the bettor picks the winner. See the following table:
